Eva van Rooij, PhD is a group leader at the Hubrecht Institute and Professor of Molecular Cardiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht. After receiving her PhD at the Dept of Cardiology at the University Hospital Maastricht in the Netherlands, she went on to complete postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in the lab of Dr. Eric Olson. Here she served as lead scientist in the studies that linked microRNAs to cardiovascular disease, forming the foundation of a biotech company, called miRagen Therapeutics. In her current academic work, she combines high-end sequencing technologies, stem cells and mouse genetics to identify the important pathways for cardiac remodeling and repair that could aid in the development of new therapies
„It is an incredibly exciting time to be a molecular scientist. Current research capabilities are generating unprecedented opportunities to discover new biology and as such develop and test new therapeutic interventions. This also applies to the cardiac field and stem cell-based models, such as the cardiac organoids, are one of the exciting advancements supporting the near term development of new treatment options for patients suffering from heart disease.“
